Making Seeni Sambal

This is Champi's mother mixing chilis and onions (seeni) to make a spicy but very tasty condiment (sambal). She's using a mortar and pestle to grind and mix the ingredients. The one next to stove is for pounding rice into flour.

This is a typical village kitchen and cooking arrangement. Dry palm frond stalks used for fuel are stored beneath the fireplace. Coconut shell containers are stacked behind the cooking pot holder.

This photo is from last year. The recent heavy rains have caused the hillside to crash into the back of the house and mud and water covered the kitchen floor. Most of it has been mopped out but it is still a mess. If it remains sunny today and tomorrow, some of the village boys may be able to start digging the dirt away that has broken the water supply and blocked the toilet door.
